Brexit

Immigration consultant's notes. How to immigrate to the UK after Brexit. What awaits UK citizens in EU countries.

UK authorities have once again confirmed that EU citizens arriving in the UK until the end of 2020 will be able to stay in the country for three years, that is, until the end of 2023.

Brexit apologists would be happy to end freedom of movement from the EU to the UK on the day Brexit comes into force, but they don’t even have information about who is in the country and on what grounds. Therefore, the idea of “tight checks and regaining border control” will be implemented, but gradually and taking into account the real capabilities of the UK Border Control Service.

As for third-country nationals, (as has already been stated many times), they are waiting for a point system for evaluating candidates, which should (according to the authorities) embody all the advantages of similar systems operating in Australia, Canada, Austria. In fairness, there is currently no understanding of the final form of this system. Its implementation period is 2021.

But the main goal is still to attract qualified personnel to the country who can contribute to the UK economy.

For their part, the authorities of the EU countries were also concerned about the stay of UK citizens in their territories.

In particular, Italy has defined the following rules:

  • if on the date of Brexit a UK citizen regularly resided in Italy for at least 5 years, he can apply for permanent residence status in the EU (Directive 2003/109 / EC);
  • if, on Brexit's date, a UK citizen has been resident in Italy regularly for less than 5 years, then he can apply for a residence permit valid for 5 years;
  • starting January 1, 2021, UK citizens and their families from non-EU countries that do not comply with the above provisions will be subject to the same sanctions that apply to all citizens that do not meet EU requirements;
  • UK citizens residing in Italy for at least 4 years prior to the effective date of Brexit are eligible to apply for Italian citizenship until December 31, 2020. Applications submitted after this date will be processed in accordance with the rules applicable to all other third-country nationals.
